Mediating Effect of Depression on the Relationship between Social Support and Self-Reliance of Homeless People

Lee Sung-Kyu
Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine the mediating effect of depression on the relationship between social support and self-reliance of homeless people. Using a convenience sampling method, the study sample of 278 homeless people was recruited from temporary protection centers, self-reliance centers, and rehabilitation centers in Seoul. Study findings are as follows. First, the higher social support had a positive effect on self-reliance of the homeless. Second, the higher social support received from family, relatives, and non-homeless friends reduced the level of depression. Third, the lower level of depression enhanced self-reliance of the homeless. Fourth, depression was effective in serving as a mediator on the relationship between social support received from family, relatives, and non-homeless friends and self-reliance of the homeless, but not on the relationship between social support from homeless friends and self-reliance. Study findings suggest social welfare implications in regard to depression, self-reliance, and social support for homeless people.
